Marcel Boldorf serves as Professor of German Civilization and Professor of German History and Culture at the University of Lyon 2 Lumière's Faculty of Languages. His academic career spans multiple prestigious institutions across Germany, including Ruhr University Bochum where he conducted a DFG project in economic and business history from 2007-2013, and interim professorships at European University Viadrina, Humboldt University Berlin, LMU Munich, Saarland University, and TU Darmstadt during the same period.
Boldorf's research interests encompass social and economic history since the early modern period, with particular expertise in social policy and poor relief systems, the Industrial Revolution, institutional economics, and the economic dimensions of both World Wars. His scholarly focus extends to the economic history of both the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, examining how political regimes shaped economic structures and institutions.
His extensive publication portfolio reveals a consistent analytical thread examining economic systems under extraordinary political conditions, particularly occupation regimes and totalitarian states. Boldorf's work demonstrates methodological sophistication in combining institutional economics with historical analysis, frequently exploring transaction costs, middlemen functions, and economic governance structures across different historical periods. His research shows particular strength in comparative Franco-German economic history during periods of conflict and reconstruction.
Boldorf currently leads two significant research projects: a study on the history of the Reichsbank during World War II with focus on France and Belgium, and a comprehensive monograph on the economy in National Socialism. His earlier work includes substantial contributions to understanding economic governance in the Soviet Occupation Zone and East Germany, as well as the transformation of economic elites in post-1945 Europe.
