Marc van den Berg

Marc van den Berg is an Assistant Professor of Integrated Project Delivery at the University of Twente, The Netherlands. His research advances circular construction and sustainable built-environment transitions through digital technologies, ethnographic methods, and multi-actor innovation processes. He leads projects on Building Information Modelling (BIM) for circularity, deconstruction and reuse logistics, and strategic niche management in construction.

Research Interests

Dr. van den Berg’s work sits at the intersection of digital construction technologies and circular-economy transitions. He investigates:

• BIM-enabled circularity assessment across design, construction and demolition phases
• Ethnographic studies of on-site deconstruction practices and reuse realisation
• Agent-based modelling of material-supply matchmaking and circularity hubs
• Multi-actor decision-making tools for sustainable project delivery

His methodological repertoire combines design-science research, interpretative phenomenology, semi-structured interviews, and serious gaming to co-create actionable knowledge with industry and governmental partners.

Doctoral Supervision & Grants

He has supervised at least one PhD candidate (L. Jiang) whose dissertation focused on circularity assessment with BIM. He participates in multiple Dutch and EU-funded consortia exploring circular construction ecosystems, digital twins for deconstruction, and field-lab experimentation.

Labs & Teams

Dr. van den Berg is a core member of the Integrated Project Delivery research group at the University of Twente. He also co-leads the Fieldlabs@Scale initiative, producing open datasets and toolkits for circular construction innovation.
