Marc Williams' research centers on critical contemporary issues in global politics. His work examines environmental security in the Pacific region, the institutionalization of the BRICS nations, and the complex relationship between race and the international order. He investigates how global governance structures respond to emerging challenges like the sharing economy and climate change. His scholarship bridges theoretical frameworks with practical policy implications, particularly regarding developing countries' positions within the world system and the intersection of trade and environmental concerns.
Williams actively mentors the next generation of scholars through HDR supervision in international political economy, global environmental politics, and global governance. His current research includes an Australian Research Council Discovery Project (2011-2013) examining climate change and environmental security in the Pacific, focusing on regional organizations' roles in addressing these security challenges. This work has direct policy relevance for Pacific Island nations facing profound development and stability consequences from climate change.
