Marc Volovici is the Alfred Landecker Lecturer in the Department of Jewish History at the University of Haifa, within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Previously, he held the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at Birkbeck, University of London, where he was affiliated with the Birkbeck Institute for the Study of Antisemitism and the Department of History.
His research focuses on modern Jewish politics and culture in Central and Eastern Europe, antisemitism, the Holocaust, and the role of language in Jewish nationalism. He is the author of German as a Jewish Problem: The Language Politics of Jewish Nationalism (2020), which explores the contested role of German in Jewish history, and co-editor of Antisemitism, Islamophobia, and the Politics of Definition (2023), examining the challenges of defining these phenomena. He has also contributed to exhibitions, such as Jews, Money, Myth at the Jewish Museum London, serving as an academic advisor and co-editor of its catalogue.
Recent publications include analyses of the Eichmann trial’s linguistic dynamics (2023) and the evolving status of the German language in Zionist contexts (2023). His work bridges historical inquiry with contemporary debates on prejudice and identity.
Volovici’s scholarly contributions have been recognized through awards such as the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship. He actively engages with interdisciplinary research, including collaborations on defining antisemitism and Islamophobia, and has presented widely on topics ranging from language politics to Holocaust studies.
His affiliations include the University of Haifa’s Department of Jewish History and prior roles at Birkbeck. He continues to explore the ethical and political dimensions of public self-criticism in Jewish politics, extending his research into post-Holocaust contexts.
