Marc Unternährer

Marc Unternährer is an Associate Lecturer at the Lucerne School of Music (HSLU), part of the Institute of Jazz and Folk Music. He specializes in contemporary music performance, improvisation, and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Education: Received Lehrdiplom and Konzertdiplom (both with distinction) in Tuba from the Lucerne School of Music under Simon Styles. Further deepened his expertise through a 5-month residency in Chicago (2002) via the Sister Cities program, fostering ongoing transatlantic collaborations.

Research & Projects: Focuses on free improvisation pedagogy, notably co-authoring the publication Kompendium zur Vermittlung Freier Improvisation (2019). Organized the conference Freie Improvisation at HSLU. Active in experimental music ensembles including NAH Trio, Pipelines, and Albins Alpin Quintett.

Performance Work: Theater collaborations with AD Wölfli, Schauspielhaus Zürich, and Werkstatt für Theater Luzern. Improvisation partnerships with artists like John Wolf Brennan, Fred Lonberg-Holm, and Guillermo Gregorio. Maintains regular artistic presence in Chicago.
