Marc T. Swogger is a clinical psychologist and part-time associate professor at the University of Rochester, affiliated with both the School of Medicine and Dentistry (Department of Psychiatry and Department of Medicine, Palliative Care). His work spans clinical practice, research, and clinician training, with a focus on harm reduction, substance use, and mental health in justice-involved populations.

Dr. Swogger investigates therapeutic and harmful substance use, particularly kratom’s public health effects, and explores psychedelic psychotherapies for terminal illness distress. His research also examines psychopathy, violence, suicidal behavior, and interventions for substance use disorders.
Scientific awards include the 2009 Loan Repayment Program (LRP) Awardee, the 2006 Christine Louro Award, and a 2003 Graduate Fellowship. As co-Principal Investigator with Robert Horowitz, MD, he leads a multi-site study on ketamine-assisted psychotherapy for end-of-life distress.
