Dr Marc Schelhase is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the Defence Studies Department at King’s College London, affiliated with the Joint Services Command and Staff College, UK Defence Academy. He established the MSc in Defence Innovation and previously served as a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, Bruges (2009–2020). His research focuses on political economy, risk analysis, regionalisation/globalisation, and zemiology/social harms.
Education: PhD in Politics and International Studies (University of Warwick, 2005), MA and BA in International Relations (Keele University, 1998–2000). He has authored two books, including The Political Economy of Risk in Finance and the Military (2023), and contributes to interdisciplinary research groups like the King’s Centre for Defence Economics and Management (KCDEM) and the Economic Conflict & Competition Research Group (ECCRG).
His work examines risk management dilemmas in finance and military contexts, the socio-economic impacts of homeownership, and regional integration dynamics in the Americas. He actively supervises PhD students in political economy, risk, and related fields. Professional activities include policy advising (e.g., House of Lords Risk Assessment Committee) and public engagement through media commentary and lectures.
