Dr. Marc Mokrech is a GIS Lecturer in the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL), where he also serves as a Senior Research Scientist at the Environmental Institute of Houston. He holds a Ph.D. in Geographic Information Science (GIS) from King’s College, London University (2001), an M.Sc. in Engineering from Cairo University (1995), and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Aleppo University (1986). Prior roles include Assistant Professor at UAE University (UAE) and Senior Research Scientist/Lecturer at Southampton University (UK).
Research Expertise: Dr. Mokrech specializes in Geospatial Sciences with focus on sea-level rise adaptation, nature-based solutions, hydrology, small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) in ecology, and LiDAR technology. His work integrates advanced geospatial tools to address environmental challenges like coastal hazard mitigation and ecosystem restoration.
Recent Research Projects:
- 2023: Mangrove restoration strategies for deltaic coastal protection
- 2023: Microplastic impacts on wetland species and shoreline habitats
- 2020: Alligator snapping turtle population viability studies
- 2017: UAV-based shorebird population assessments
- 2014: High-end climate scenario adaptation strategies (IMPRESSIONS)
Teaching: Teaches courses including ENSC 4037 GIS, ENSC 4335 Applied GIS, and Web GIS. Develops special-topic courses on geospatial technologies.
Lab/Affiliations: Active at the Environmental Institute of Houston, focusing on applied environmental research with real-world impact.
