Marc D. Brown

Marc D. Brown, M.D. is a tenured Professor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He serves as a specialist in Mohs Surgery, Dermatology, and Cancer treatment. Dr. Brown is affiliated with UR Medicine Faculty and Accountable Health Partners, providing care at the Dermatology - Red Creek location in Henrietta, New York.

Dr. Brown received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1979. He completed residency training in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in 1982, followed by dermatology residency training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI in 1987. He then completed a two-year fellowship in Mohs Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology in 1989.

Dr. Brown's research focuses on skin cancer treatment, particularly Mohs micrographic surgery, melanoma management, and facial reconstruction. His work addresses challenging and unusual skin cancers, with special emphasis on atypical fibroxanthoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and skin cancer in organ transplant recipients. His clinical practice involves performing over 2,000 Mohs procedures annually, totaling more than 50,000 throughout his career.

His publication record shows consistent contributions to dermatologic literature, with focus areas evolving from cyclosporine applications in the 1980s-90s to increasingly specialized work on skin cancer management, particularly for complex cases involving organ transplant recipients and rare cutaneous tumors in the 2000s.

Dr. Brown has served as director of both the Dermatology Residency Program and the Mohs Surgery Fellowship Program at the University of Rochester, mentoring numerous residents and fellows. His teaching extends to local and national meetings where he lectures on Mohs surgery, melanoma, facial reconstruction, and challenging skin cancers. He has published more than 60 articles and two books, and serves as an editorial reviewer for several major dermatologic journals.

As an active member of the Wilmot Cancer Center, Dr. Brown has been instrumental in developing protocols for skin cancer treatment, particularly for complex cases involving organ transplant recipients and unusual cutaneous tumors. His clinical expertise is reflected in his high-volume Mohs surgery practice and consistently positive patient feedback regarding his surgical skill and patient communication.
