Marc Aymes is a Researcher and Director of Studies at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), affiliated with the Centre for Turkish, Ottoman, Balkan and Central Asian Studies (CETOBaC). He holds a research director position at the CNRS and has conducted extensive work in France, Germany, Cyprus, the U.S., Greece, and Turkey. His scholarly focus spans Ottoman Empire studies, philology, cultural transfers, and digital humanities in the Mediterranean.
Research Interests: Aymes specializes in Ottoman history (18th–21st centuries), with emphasis on philology, social sciences, and the interplay between imperial studies and local governance. His work examines archival practices, language reforms, and the sociological dimensions of Ottoman administration, particularly in provinces like Cyprus.
Recent Publications: His 2025 monograph Ottoman Fake investigates forgery and bureaucratic practices across three centuries. Earlier works include analyses of Ottoman legal language, urbanity in Cyprus, and comparative studies on imperial governance. Articles span topics like Ottoman modernity, postcolonial theory, and the historiography of administrative reforms.
Academic Leadership: Aymes co-edits Archiv Orientalni and contributes to editorial boards of journals such as Cahiers du monde russe. He has supervised numerous MA and PhD theses on themes like political activism in Turkey, Ottoman archival practices, and cultural identity in post-genocide Turkey.
