Manuela Mourao is a Professor of English at Old Dominion University (ODU), affiliated with the College of Arts & Letters. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1990), an M.A. in English from Eastern Illinois University (1985), and an additional degree from the University of Porto (1984). Her research focuses on 19th-century British literature, critical theory, cultural studies, and comparative literature. Mourao has received the Robin L. Hixon Fellowship (2010-2011) and has authored/edited books such as Altered Habits: Reconsidering the Nun in Fiction and The Newgate Novel. Her work explores themes like gender, nationalism, colonialism, and race, with notable publications analyzing British women travelers' writings about Portugal and the formation of Portuguese racial identity. She has presented widely at conferences including NAVSA, SHARP, and the Romanticism conference in Dublin. Mourao's academic contributions span literary criticism, historical analysis, and interdisciplinary scholarship.
