Manuel Arcila Garrido

Manuel Arcila Garrido is a Professor at the University of Cadiz, affiliated with the Department of History, Geography and Philosophy within the Faculty of Humanities. He is a member of the Research Institute for Sustainable Social Development (INDESS) and leads research group HUM117 focused on Coastal Planning and Management. His work spans geographical analysis, tourism studies, and cultural heritage management, with particular emphasis on the Cádiz region and cross-border cooperation with Morocco's Tangier-Tetouan region.

His research interests include Cultural Cartography, Sun and Beach Tourism Studies, Tourism Management, and Coastal Planning. He earned his PhD from the University of Seville in 2000 with a thesis titled 'Analysis of a coastal metropolitan area in the Bay of Cadiz. The use of a geographic information system for integrated management,' supervised by Dr. Juan Manuel Barragán Muñoz.

His recent publications reveal a strong focus on heritage tourism, sustainable coastal development, and GIS applications in tourism planning. His work demonstrates consistent output with multiple publications in 2025, 2024, and 2023, particularly examining the territorialization of cultural heritage, socio-ecosystem services for heritage assessment, and geomarketing-based management for vulnerable coastal heritage.

His research bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications, particularly in the areas of tourism potential indices, sustainable development goals implementation, and adaptive management of cultural resources. His work often incorporates interdisciplinary approaches combining geography, tourism studies, and environmental management.
