Manuel Abad Roldán

Manuel Abad Roldán is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the IQS School of Engineering, Universitat Ramon Llull, Spain. He is actively engaged in research and academic leadership, currently serving as the Coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Materials Science and Engineering. His work is centered on advanced materials, particularly nanostructured thin films and coatings developed via Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) techniques.

His research interests include:

• Synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials
• Tribological and mechanical properties of thin films and bulk metallic glasses
• High-temperature nanoindentation
• Advanced manufacturing and surface engineering
• Development of functional coatings for biomedical applications, especially dental implants

His recent publications reflect a strong focus on HiPIMS-deposited multilayer coatings, carbon-incorporated thin films, and 3D-printed biocompatible polymers. These works emphasize material performance, microstructural analysis, and industrial applicability, particularly in medical and engineering sectors.

He leads the research group GAM – Applied Mechanics and Advanced Manufacturing, which is involved in multiple national and institutional projects such as EQUIDENTAL and 3DPC. These projects focus on surface treatments for dental implants and lightweight composite materials, respectively, demonstrating his commitment to applied research and innovation.

Manuel Abad Roldán has been supported by various research grants and collaborates internationally. He supervises master’s theses and contributes significantly to curriculum development in materials science education.
