Prof. Manu Kapur is a Full Professor at ETH Zurich’s Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences, leading the Singapore-ETH Center and directing The Future Learning Initiative (FLI). He is also the Founding Chair of the ETH Zurich–EPFL Joint Doctoral Program in Learning Sciences. Previously, he held professorships at the Education University of Hong Kong and Singapore’s National Institute of Education (NIE/NTU), where he led the Learning Sciences Lab and Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning Department.
Education: A mechanical engineering graduate, he pursued a PhD in Learning Sciences at Columbia University, alongside dual master’s degrees in Applied Statistics (Columbia) and Education (NIE). His career bridges engineering design principles with educational theory.
Research Focus: Prof. Kapur pioneered the Productive Failure theory, emphasizing structured failure to enhance learning. His work transforms STEM education globally and influenced Singapore’s pre-university mathematics curriculum. His research attracts significant funding (~US$13M) and media attention (TIME Magazine, NZZ, WEF).
Leadership & Impact: He directed a $50M Singaporean R&D program for digital media in education. Served on OECD’s PISA 21st Century Skills assessment advisory board and as associate editor for top journals. Keynote speaker at global events (Royal Society, World Economic Forum).
Initiatives: Leads FLI to reimagine future learning ecosystems and co-founded the ETH-EPFL doctoral program to advance interdisciplinary learning sciences research.
