Barcelona Institute for Global Healthمعرفی
Manolis Kogevinas is a Research Professor at ISGlobal (Barcelona Institute for Global Health), where he also served as Scientific Director of the Severo Ochoa distinction (2019–2024). He has held academic and research positions at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO), IMIM Barcelona, and was co-Director of CREAL. He has been Professor of Epidemiology at the Medical School in Heraklion, Greece, and the National School of Public Health, Athens.
His educational background includes a medical degree from the Medical School of Athens and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of London (1989).
Dr. Kogevinas's research focuses on environmental and occupational epidemiology, particularly circadian disruption, the exposome, molecular epidemiology, cancer, child health, and water pollution. His work integrates large population-based studies with biomarker and genomic data to understand disease etiology. He has published over 600 scientific papers and is a leader in exposome research and environmental health policy.
His recent publications (2024–2025) reveal a strong focus on night shift work, artificial light at night, long-COVID, mental health, and environmental exposures (e.g., water disinfection by-products, air pollution). These works employ advanced epidemiological designs, including case-control, cohort, and pooled analyses, often leveraging multi-omics data and exposome-wide approaches.
- Scientific Director of the Severo Ochoa distinction (2019–2024)
- President of the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE), 2016–2017
- Director of the European Educational Programme in Epidemiology (EEPE)
- Active member of WHO and EU research evaluation committees
Dr. Kogevinas has directed 14 doctoral researchers and mentored numerous MPH, PhD, and postdoctoral students. He has led major research initiatives such as the MCC-Spain study, Rhea mother-child cohort, and the EPHOR project. His work is supported by extensive EU and international grants focused on occupational and environmental health. He is also involved in developing tools for exposome assessment and risk prediction.
He leads and contributes to large consortia including the Exposome Project for Health and Occupational Research (EPHOR), COVICAT (long-COVID in Catalonia), and the Rhea cohort in Crete. These teams integrate epidemiology, genomics, metabolomics, and public health policy to address complex environmental health challenges.
