Prof. Dr. Manfred Kappes serves as Director and Research Unit Chair of the Physical Chemistry of Nanoscale Systems at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), jointly affiliated with the Institute of Nanotechnology (INT) and the Institute of Physical Chemistry (IPC) on Campus South. His research unit operates under Helmholtz Association funding frameworks.
Research focuses on three core Helmholtz-funded domains: Functional Molecules, Carbon-based Nanostructures, and Nanomaterials and Nanocatalysis. Key methodologies include polymer-wrapping techniques for carbon nanotube enrichment, trapped ion electron diffraction for cluster analysis, and scalable separation protocols for nanotube fractions. The group emphasizes experimental-computational synergy in nanoscale system characterization.
Current publications demonstrate expertise in carbon nanotube transistor applications, transition metal cluster structural analysis, and nanomaterial separation technologies. Research outputs prioritize scalable methodologies with industrial applicability, particularly in nanoelectronics and catalytic nanomaterials.
- No scientific awards or fellowships were documented in source materials
The research unit maintains dual-site operations across INT's Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen campus (Hermann-von-Helmholtz-Platz 1) and IPC's Campus South facilities (Building 30.44, Room 504), leveraging KIT's integrated nanocharacterization infrastructure. Current projects emphasize carbon nanotube applications in short-channel transistors and fundamental cluster chemistry investigations.
