Manal Massalha is a Lecturer in Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her interdisciplinary practice combines sociological theory, urban ethnography, and social documentary photography to explore pressing social, urban, and political issues.
- PhD in Sociology (2015) and MSc in Human Rights (2006) from the London School of Economics
- Research focuses on decolonizing knowledge production, urban conviviality, gentrification, and politics of representation
Her creative methodology bridges theory, practice, and art while centering marginalized voices. Current projects examine:
- Settler-colonial violence and erasure in East Jerusalem
- Infrastructure failures in colonized urban spaces
- Visual documentation of aging, dementia, and solidarity networks
- Environmental justice through cargo bike advocacy
- Colonial legacies in Kerala's socialist governance
Her forthcoming co-edited book Sonic Justice (2025) and article Ethnographies of Listening will expand critical frameworks for understanding urban exclusion. She has previously published on waste infrastructure in East Jerusalem and visual reflections of urban hope in Hackney.
