Malin Ernberg is a Professor in Clinical Oral Physiology and Senior Dentist at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Dental Medicine. She holds leadership roles including President of the European Academy of Orofacial Pain and Dysfunction (2022-2025) and previously served as President of the Swedish Pain Society (2013-2016) and the Neuroscience Group of the International Association for Dental Research (2011-2012).
Education: DDS (Karolinska Institutet, 1979), PhD (1999), and Associate Professorship (2004). She held a 50% clinical research position funded by the Swedish Research Council (2009-2014).
Research focuses on chronic orofacial pain mechanisms, sex differences in jaw muscle pain, and translational studies bridging basic research and clinical intervention. Her group investigates biomarkers (serotonin, cytokines), collaborations include the Scandinavian Center for Orofacial Neuroscience (SCON) and the Eastman Institute's Specialist Clinic for Orofacial Pain.
Publications: Over 150 papers, reviews, and book chapters. Recent work explores botulinum toxin efficacy, salivary biomarkers in JIA, and exercise interventions for fibromyalgia.
Awards: Henry Beyron Award (2012), Swedish Dental Society's Best Thesis (2001).
Teaching innovations include Team-Based Learning in Orofacial Pain curricula and implementing Observed Structural Clinical Examinations (OSCE) for dental students.
Grants: Includes NIH-funded projects on TMJ neuron phenotyping and CIHR research on TMD biomarkers.
