Malar Francis serves as a Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry and Materials Science at Aalto University's School of Chemical Engineering. Her role centers on advanced materials research within the university's inorganic chemistry specialization, contributing to cutting-edge developments in thin-film technologies and energy storage solutions.
Her research expertise spans inorganic materials chemistry with intensive focus on atomic layer deposition (ALD) and molecular layer deposition (MLD) techniques. She specializes in engineering thin-film architectures for next-generation lithium-ion batteries and solid-state electrolytes, addressing critical challenges in energy density and electrochemical stability through precision material synthesis.
Currently, she is an active member of the EU Horizon Europe ERC project UniEn-MLD: Unique ALD/MLD-Enabled Material Functions (2023-2028), led by Professor Maarit Karppinen. This €2.5 million initiative targets revolutionary material interfaces through atomic-scale deposition control, with her work directly contributing to the project's 100% focus on thin-film innovation and 36% emphasis on ALD process development.
Within Aalto's research ecosystem, she collaborates with multidisciplinary teams across the Thin Films research group, integrating materials characterization with electrochemical testing to advance sustainable battery technologies for European energy transition goals.
