Maksim Shulga is a Researcher in the Department of History at the European University Institute (EUI), where he is pursuing doctoral research on socio-economic dynamics in the late Soviet Union. His work is supervised by Professor Glenda Sluga, with Alexia Yates serving as second reader.
His research interests focus on the interplay between private life and state ideology in the Soviet context, particularly examining how market behaviors and consumption practices persisted and evolved despite official communist doctrines. This includes studying heterogeneities in market access, informal economies, and the preservation of private space during the period 1953–1989.
As a current researcher affiliated with one of Europe’s leading institutions for advanced studies in the social sciences and humanities, Shulga contributes to ongoing scholarly conversations about everyday life under state socialism, the resilience of informal economies, and the cultural dimensions of economic behavior in planned economies.
He is a national of the Russian Federation and joined the EUI cohort in 2024.
