Makrita Solitei is a Research Fellow at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), affiliated with the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of Wollongong. Her work focuses on sustainable development through circular economy practices, waste management innovations, and Indigenous-led governance in marine and coastal environments. She actively collaborates with marginalized and Indigenous communities in Kenya and New South Wales to co-design policies and frameworks that integrate traditional knowledge with modern sustainability practices.
Research interests include the blue economy, resource management in the Global South, and entrepreneurship models that balance ecological and economic resilience. She coordinates courses on the blue economy and supervises research projects addressing abalone ranching on Yuin Country and migrant entrepreneurship challenges. In 2023, she received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching and Learning.
Makrita’s teaching and supervision emphasize community-driven solutions, having developed the Blue Economy Short Course and guided studies on cultural-commercial synergies in coastal communities.
