Mairi Maclean is a Professor and Associate Dean (Faculty) at the University of Bath, affiliated with the Centre for Business, Organisations and Society (CBOS) and the Centre for Future of Work. Previously, she held roles such as Associate Dean for Research at Newcastle University, Director of Research at the University of Exeter, and Deputy Dean at Royal Holloway. Her research focuses on international business elites, elite power dynamics, entrepreneurial philanthropy, and historical organization studies, employing a Bourdieusian theoretical framework. She leads a team examining elite networks and corporate governance across France and the UK, and collaborates on projects exploring the historical foundations of management practices and strategic change.
Her research has been funded by the ESRC, Leverhulme Trust, and others, including a £394K project on the Rowntree Business Lectures and the Interwar British Management Movement. She has supervised seven doctoral students and contributed to over 120 publications. Her work intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing inequalities and sustainable economic practices.
Key research areas include elite philanthropy, the ethics of entrepreneurial giving, and the role of history in organizational strategy. Recent projects examine Victorian-era social entrepreneurship and the institutionalization of global hotel chains. She actively participates in academic networks like the Centre for Research on Entrepreneurship, Wealth and Philanthropy (REWP) at Newcastle University.
Publications span journals such as Management Learning, Human Relations, and Business History, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to organizational theory, history, and sociology.
