Maija Peltola is a Lecturer in Phonetics and Vice Rector at the University of Turku, leading the LAB-laboratory Phonetics research group and the Learning, Age & Bilingualism laboratory. Her research focuses on speech perception/production, non-native language learning, bilingualism, and multilingualism, with emphasis on age-related factors, pronunciation training, and speech data analysis. She coordinates the Kone Foundation-funded project on Namibian languages and collaborates internationally via Sanako-sponsored networks.
Education: Holds a PhD from the University of Turku’s Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience, with postdoctoral studies in preattentive speech processing. Her academic career includes teaching phonetics courses on speech theories, acoustic analysis, and laboratory techniques.
Research highlights include studies on Namibian English phonetics, neuroplasticity in speech learning, and multilingual childhood education. She advocates for endangered language preservation and applies speech data to improve non-native Finnish learning for children.
