Maija Dambrova is a Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Rīga Stradiņš University, and Head of the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Pharmacology at the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis. Her research focuses on metabolic processes, mitochondrial function, and drug mechanism studies, particularly in cardiometabolic diseases. She holds expert roles in the Latvian Council of Science for Basic Medicine (2015–present).
- Expert, 3.1 Basic Medicine, Latvian Council of Science (2024–2027)
- Expert, 1.6 Biological Sciences, Latvian Council of Science (2015–2018)
Her research interests include carnitine metabolism, fatty acid β-oxidation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. Key projects involve studying acylcarnitines in diabetes, nanoparticles in breast cancer therapy, and medicinal plant bioactivity.
She has received prestigious awards, including the Grand Medal of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (2024) and the Walter Zapp Prize (2019). Her lab explores novel drug mechanisms and has contributed to advancements in metabolic disease research.
