Mahdi Tavalaei serves as Senior Lecturer in Strategy and Digital Transformation at the Department of Business Analytics and Operations, Surrey Business School, University of Surrey. He is an active member of the Centre of Digital Economy (CoDE) and Centre for Decentralised Digital Economy (DECaDE), contributing significantly to digital platform research. His academic credentials include a PhD in Business Studies (Strategy) from IE Business School, Madrid, complemented by a Master's in Research Methodology, MBA in Strategy, and BSc in Physics.
Dr. Tavalaei's research focuses on competitive strategy within platform-based ecosystems, examining how platforms evolve and compete in markets with network externalities. His expertise spans Competition in Platform-Based Ecosystems, Two-sided Markets, Platform Governance, and Decentralised Governance through blockchain technology. He has secured research funding from British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grants (2020-2022) for his project exploring power dynamics in digital platforms.
His publication record demonstrates consistent high-impact contributions, with recent work in the Journal of Management Studies (2025) examining how benefit-linked cross-subsidization strategies can balance variety and quality trade-offs in multisided platforms. His systematic literature review on blockchain adoption factors (2024) has received significant attention, identifying 880 factors across 29 themes that influence organizational blockchain adoption.

As a dedicated supervisor, Dr. Tavalaei currently guides PhD students researching blockchain adoption (Ying Zhang), sharing economy business models (Fred Ofori), and sustainable energy paradigms (Proadpran Boonprasurd Piccini). His teaching portfolio includes Statistics and Econometrics (MSc) and Business Intelligence and Analytics (MBA/EMBA), where he serves as module leader for the Executive MBA program.
Within Surrey Business School, Dr. Tavalaei serves as Research Lead for the Department of Business Analytics and Operations (2023-2025) and previously held the position of Interim Exchange Coordinator (2020-2021). He actively contributes to the British Academy of Management Peer Review College and participates in multiple research centers including the Centre for Business Analytics in Practice.
