Mahan Ellison is an Associate Professor of Spanish at Furman University. His research focuses on literary and historical ties between Spain and Africa, exploring themes of alterity, identity, and spatial conceptualization. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Kentucky and a B.A. from Furman University. Ellison has been recognized with prestigious awards including the 2020-2021 Fulbright Senior Scholar grant for Morocco and Spain, and a National Endowment for the Humanities grant (2015).
His research projects include analyzing Hispanophone Moroccan authors' representations of natural spaces and the politicization of Spain-Africa narratives. Representative publications include *Africa in the Contemporary Spanish Novel, 1990-2010* (2021) and peer-reviewed articles on Sahrawi literature and Saharan cultural imagery. Ellison has also contributed book chapters on Equatoguinean diasporic narratives and African immigrants in Spanish texts.
