Mahamadou Sagna is an Associate Professor in Social Science & Policy Studies at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), where he serves as the Inaugural Director of Africana Studies. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Caen, an MBA from Ecole des 3A, and an MA from the University of Lyon. His interdisciplinary work bridges sociology, economic anthropology, and ethnopsychiatry.
His research explores social networks, globalization, monetary symbolism, poverty dynamics, and technology adoption among economically disadvantaged populations. Key themes include the cultural dimensions of exchange systems and the role of diaspora communities in development.
Professor Sagna has taught internationally at institutions including Princeton University, University of Maryland, and Schiller University. His courses cover 'Money and Religion', 'Science, Technology and Development', and 'Economic Culture in Africa'.
He founded a Senegalese diaspora organization focused on professional networking and development, organizing biennial 'Homecoming' conferences in Senegal. Student projects advised by him span e-waste management in Senegal, sustainable agriculture in Ghana, and irrigation systems in Paraguay.
