Magnus Fiskesjö is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Cornell University with affiliations in East Asian and Southeast Asian Studies programs. His research investigates ethnic relations, state formations, and cultural heritage politics in China and Southeast Asia.
Fieldwork-based studies examine how minority communities navigate state power in borderland regions, with recent focus on cultural preservation under threat. Publications document indigenous histories and analyze political uses of archaeological and genetic research in nationalist projects.
Research has been supported by multiple grants including from the Social Science Research Council. Current projects address cultural genocide and heritage destruction in Xinjiang through ethnographic and historical methods.
