Magnus Esmark

Magnus Esmark is an Associate Professor at the University of Inland Norway's Department of Law within the Inland School of Business and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Copenhagen and currently holds a shared position between the University of Inland Norway and the University of Oslo until 2027. Additionally, he is a Global Research Fellow at iCourts (University of Copenhagen) and will be a guest researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut für Rechtsgeschichte und Rechtstheorie in Frankfurt from 2025–2026.
His research focuses on the national reception and production of EU law, blending legal sociology, legal history, and doctrinal analysis. Current projects include conceptual history of 'handlingsrommet' in Norwegian EEA law, emphasizing jurist struggles over legal authority. His doctoral work analyzed Denmark's half-century EU law reception through a post-Bourdieuian legal sociology framework, revealing how national power dynamics shaped legal understanding over EU narratives.
Publications span European Law Open, Kritisk juss, and German Law Journal, addressing topics like ECtHR citation practices and Danish legal integration narratives. He has also contributed to computational legal studies, using network analysis to map legal references.
Esmark's academic roles include affiliations across multiple institutions, reflecting his transnational research focus on European legal frameworks and their national implementations.
