Magne Njåstad is a Professor in the Department of Historical and Classical Studies at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). His research focuses on medieval and early modern Norwegian and Scandinavian history, with particular emphasis on peasant resistance, legal history, and state formation. He holds a PhD from NTNU based on his 2003 dissertation Grenser for makt: Konflikter og konfliktløsning mellom lokalsamfunn og øvrighet ca. 1300-1540.
His work examines agrarian rebellions, legal frameworks, and administrative systems in contexts like Jemtland and Trøndelag. Notable contributions include Norvegr: Norges historie 1400-1840 (2011), a seminal work on Norwegian history, and co-editing ÆMULA LAURI (2009) on the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. He teaches courses such as HIST2004 (Early Modern History) and HIST3475 (Trade, Labour and Consumption).
Njåstad’s recent publications explore topics ranging from the Archbishop’s Palace at Nidaros Cathedral (2025) to Sweden’s Lutheran transition (2020). His research bridges legal, social, and political dimensions of historical change, with a focus on how conflict and literacy shaped Scandinavian institutions.
