Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez is a Professor at The University of Texas at Austin's School of Journalism and Media. She has over 17 years of professional journalism experience with outlets like the Boston Globe and Dallas Morning News. Her academic focus includes oral history's intersection with journalism and U.S. Latino representation in media. She founded the Voces Oral History Project in 1999, which documents Latino WWII veterans' stories through video interviews and student-led publications, now encompassing over 960 participants.
Education includes a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (as a Freedom Forum Fellow), a Master's from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
Her research extends to media diversity initiatives, including co-founding the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) and pioneering student-professional collaboration via convention newspapers. Voces has produced conferences, books, documentaries, and educational materials, serving as a resource for scholars and filmmakers globally.
While no specific grants or awards are listed, the Voces Project is supported by grants, state funds, and private donations. No advised students are explicitly named, though UT journalism students contribute to project publications.
