Maggie McCarthy is a Professor of German Studies at Davidson College, where she has taught since 1995 with additional affiliations in Film, Media, and Digital Studies. She coordinates Davidson's Film and Media Studies minor program. Her educational background includes a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Rochester, and a B.A. from Connecticut College.
Her research explores feminism, generational conflicts, contemporary German literature and film, memory culture, digital/visual culture, migration, and identity. She has published extensively in journals including German Quarterly, New German Critique, and Camera Obscura, and authored the book Mad Mädchen: Feminism and Generational Conflict in Recent German Literature and Film (2017). She also edited German Pop Literature: A Companion (2015).
McCarthy teaches courses spanning German literature/film, digital culture, migration studies, and film adaptation. She creates short films alongside students (e.g., Girl, Reconstructed) and leads international research trips to Vienna and Berlin for thesis students. She regularly accompanies students to film festivals and academic events.
