Maggie Burnette Stogner serves as Professor of Film and Media Arts and Executive Director of the Center for Environmental Filmmaking at American University. With over 30 years of professional filmmaking experience including nine years at National Geographic, she brings extensive industry expertise to her academic role.
Her research interests include:
- Documentary filmmaking and environmental storytelling
- Engagement and impact design in film and emerging media
- Humanistic storytelling through 21st century technologies
- Creating experiential learning opportunities through creative production
Dr. Stogner's scholarship explores how compelling storytelling across multiple media formats can inspire meaningful change. She has published in academic journals including "Curator" and "The International Journal of New Media, Technology and the Arts".
As an educator, she is committed to mentoring the next generation of media makers through high-impact creative production labs that embrace diversity and inclusion. She teaches COMM-438 Production Practicum: Natl Park Service Video Project (Spring 2025) and COMM-483 Writing the Documentary Film (Fall 2025).
She founded Blue Bear Films and has collaborated with major institutions including National Geographic, the Smithsonian, and LucasFilms on world-touring cultural exhibitions such as King Tut exhibitions, The Greeks, Real Pirates, Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures, Indiana Jones and Adventure of Archaeology, and Roads of Arabia.
