Maggi Morehouse is the Burroughs Distinguished Professor of History and Culture at Coastal Carolina University (CCU), specializing in African Diaspora studies and Modern African American history. She holds a Ph.D. in African Diaspora Studies from UC Berkeley (2001), along with M.A. and B.A. degrees from San Francisco State University.
Her research focuses on global diasporas, migrations, and the Black Atlantic, with notable works including Fighting in the Jim Crow Army (2007) and The Routledge History of the American South (2018). She is affiliated with CCU’s Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies and has served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of the West Indies (Trinidad, 2001) and the University of Nottingham (UK, 2018).
Teaching includes courses on race and law, Black Studies PhD tutoring, and military history. Her media work involves oral history projects on black soldiers, enslaved potters, and Southern women. Research spans Black Britons, WWII military participation, and diasporic cultural identity.
Awards include two Fulbright Scholarships. Her interdisciplinary affiliations include Digital Culture and Design and the Master of Liberal Studies program at CCU.
