Dr. Magdalena Weingartner serves as a Professor and Research Group Leader in Molecular Plant Physiology at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences, Department of Biology. She has held her professorship since 2011 after declining a comparable position at the University of Würzburg, and previously served as Academic Councilor at the University of Erlangen from 2008-2011.
Her academic journey includes a Biochemistry Diploma from the University of Hannover (1995), doctoral research under Prof. R. Hedrich at the University of Würzburg (1999), and postdoctoral work at Rockefeller University with Prof. N.-H. Chua (1999-2002) followed by continued postdoctoral research at the University of Würzburg (2002-2008).
Dr. Weingartner's research program centers on Molecular Plant Physiology, employing advanced techniques to investigate plant cellular mechanisms, signaling pathways, and stress responses. Her work integrates plant molecular genetics, biochemical analysis, and physiological modeling to address fundamental questions in plant adaptation and development. The research group operates within the Institute of Plant Sciences and Microbiology, utilizing specialized facilities in the Otto Warburg House.
The Molecular Plant Physiology laboratory actively participates in third-party funded research initiatives and supervises final theses for undergraduate and graduate students. The team collaborates closely with other research groups in the Department of Biology, including those led by Prof. Stefan Hoth and PD Dr. Hartwig Lüthen, while maintaining technical operations through dedicated support staff.
