Magdalena Mayas is Professor and Subject Specialist in Improvisation at Lucerne School of Music. She holds a PhD in artistic research from University of Gothenburg (2020) and studied at Universität der Künste Berlin, Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin.
Her artistic research explores:
- Extended piano techniques and prepared instruments
- Timbral exploration in improvisation
- Cross-media collaborations
- Notational systems for experimental music
Publications examine improvisational structures and timbral organization in real-time composition, with recent work focusing on collaborative audio-visual practices. Awards include residencies at Villa Aurora Los Angeles, Montalvo Arts Centre, and grants from Berlin Senate.
She directs the improvisation program and supervises bachelor's projects while maintaining an international performance career spanning Europe, Australia, and North America.
