Her academic career spans over two decades, including roles as Assistant Professor at UG from 2007-2021 before her promotion to full Professor. Prior appointments include teaching art history at Catholic Schools in Gdyni and lecturing at Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.
Her academic credentials include:
- Master's degree in Art History from Catholic University of Lublin (1996), thesis on Stężyca parish church
- PhD (2003) on periodicals' role in disseminating non-geometric abstraction in 1940s-1950s Polish art
- Habilitation (2020) based on monograph 'Tropami wielokrotności. Strategie powtórzenia w sztuce polskiej lat 60. i 70. XX wieku' (Following Multiplicities: Repetition Strategies in Polish Art of the 1960s-1970s)
Professor Howorus-Czajka's research centers on Polish art from 1945-1975, with four core threads: art criticism, sculpture (artistic strategies and modular constructions), Gdańsk's artistic environment (including contemporary Tricity art scene), and picture books. Her work critically examines intersections of cultural memory, historical trauma, and artistic expression within socialist Poland's context, emphasizing how artists navigated political constraints while developing innovative visual languages.
Recent publications (2023-2025) reveal consistent engagement with Polish post-war art through analyses of authorship dissolution, creative destruction in sculpture, nomadic aesthetics, and portraiture. Her scholarship demonstrates methodological diversity, blending archival research with visual analysis to explore artists like Wanda Gołkowska and Józef Hałas, while her contributions to picture book studies bridge art history and cultural anthropology.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Medal Komisji Edukacji Narodowej
Professor Howorus-Czajka actively contributes to academic discourse through memberships in the Association for Cultural Studies, Association of Art Historians, and Polish Institute for World Art Studies. She regularly participates in international conferences, including Association for Cultural Studies events in Norrköping (2011) and Hong Kong (2010), and has delivered public lectures at Gdański Archipelag Kultury and Museum of Emigration in Gdynia. Information regarding graduate student advising and research grants is not specified in available documentation.
