Magda Helena Dziubinska is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Laval University and a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Laboratory of Ethnology and Comparative Sociology at Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense University. Her academic career centers on the study of Amazonian indigenous peoples, with particular focus on the Kakataibo of the Peruvian Amazon.
Dr. Dziubinska's research interests span across several interconnected domains of anthropological inquiry. Her primary focus is on cultural dynamics of Amazonian indigenous communities, with special attention to gender relations, political organization, and cultural heritage. She has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork among the Kakataibo people, examining how they navigate changing social landscapes while maintaining cultural identity. Her work reveals consistent engagement with themes of gender performance, political representation, and cultural adaptation among indigenous Amazonian peoples.
Her publications demonstrate a clear evolution from early studies of ritual practices and social organization to more complex analyses of cultural transformation, political representation, and identity negotiation. Her research on beauty contests among indigenous communities has illuminated how these events serve as spaces for negotiating cultural identity and gender roles, while her more recent work addresses critical issues of land rights, resource extraction, and indigenous sovereignty.
Dr. Dziubinska has presented her research at major international conferences including the Association of Critical Heritage Studies. Her methodological approach combines deep ethnographic immersion with theoretical sophistication, employing a pragmatic and interactionist framework that emphasizes the performative aspects of social life while remaining attentive to historical transformations and contemporary political contexts.
She maintains strong collaborative relationships with scholars across disciplines and institutions, contributing to interdisciplinary understanding of indigenous issues. Her research has practical implications for indigenous communities navigating complex relationships with state institutions, NGOs, and extractive industries, particularly regarding cultural preservation and political recognition.
