Madeline Endres is a transitioning academic who recently completed her PhD in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan. Starting January 2025, she will join the University of Massachusetts Amherst as an Assistant Professor. Her research uniquely bridges Software Engineering with Human Factors, focusing on programmer productivity and wellbeing through interdisciplinary methods from psychology, medicine, and education.
- PhD in Computer Science and Engineering (University of Michigan, 2024)
- Assistant Professor (University of Massachusetts Amherst, 2025)
Her work employs a hybrid approach:
- Quantitative and qualitative analysis of developer behavior
- Medical imaging (fMRI, TMS) to study cognitive programming basis
- Program synthesis and machine learning for tool development
- Empirical studies on external productivity factors (gender bias, psychoactive substances)
Recent publications highlight trends in neurosymbolic programming tools (2022-2024), cognitive causality experiments (2021-2024), and developer wellbeing research (2022-2023). Key collaborations include Microsoft Research and CISPA Helmholtz Center.
Scientific Awards:
- NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (2020)
As Engineering Teaching Consultant (2019-2024), she designed teaching materials for 6 University of Michigan courses and developed diversity training seminars. Her future work at UMass will focus on VR-based spatial reasoning training and TMS experiments to formalize causal programming cognition models.
