Madeline Dojs serves as an Instructor at the University of Mary within the HHMI Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program. She has taught the Phage Discovery course (Bio 365) since Fall 2021, guiding undergraduate students in hands-on microbiology research using Arthrobacter globiformis as a bacterial host across multiple academic terms.
Her research focuses on bacteriophage discovery and genomic analysis, emphasizing course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs). She integrates laboratory techniques with bioinformatics to advance evolutionary science education, contributing to national phage databases like PhagesDB. Her work bridges microbiology with genomic sequencing through the SEA-PHAGES network.
Dr. Dojs has mentored 15 students across Fall 2021 (10 students), Fall 2023 (4 students), and Fall 2024 (1 student), spanning freshman to senior levels. Her instruction occurs through HHMI-funded initiatives providing sequencing resources and workshop access, including the annual Phage Genomics Workshop and SEA Symposium.
She actively participates in SEA community events and collaborates with colleagues like Christine Fleischacker on course development. Her laboratory work centers on novel phage isolation from environmental samples, with contributions to genomic archives through the SRA submission system.
