Madeleine Fiona Sclater serves as a Reader in Art and Design Education and Senior Academic Fellow (Digital Learning) at The Glasgow School of Art (GSA). She holds key academic leadership roles including Programme Leader for the M.Ed in Learning, Teaching and Supervisory Practices in the Creative Disciplines, lead of the Cross-School Postgraduate Electives Programme, and co-convenor of the undergraduate/postgraduate ethics committee.
Her research pioneers interdisciplinary methodologies at the intersection of art education, technology, and social sciences. She develops innovative approaches for practice-based learning in virtual environments using advanced technologies like Second Life, with expertise in avatar mapping, visual research methods (photo-voice, filmmaking), and Activity Theory frameworks. Her work critically examines ethical dimensions, social justice applications, and psychological well-being in technology-mediated creative education across formal and informal learning contexts.
Dr. Sclater supervises PhD students with educationally focused theses across GSA disciplines and previously led the Art and Design Education Programme for the ESRC/EPSRC-funded 'InterLife: Interoperability and Transition' project (2008-2012), investigating life transitions through virtual platforms. She coordinates cross-institutional academic initiatives including the Postgraduate Electives Programme and serves as Deputy Principal Editor of the International Journal of Art and Design Education.
