Madeleine Doutney is a PhD Candidate at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with Newnham College. Her research examines notions of fatherhood and masculinity in eastern Germany (1980–2000), focusing on the socialist father figure in the GDR and its evolution post-reunification. Supervised by Professor Celia Donert, she is fully funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and Newnham College.

Her research bridges topics in gender and sexuality history, state socialism, and modern Germany. She explores intersections of family roles, ideological constructs, and social movements like proletarian internationalism in the GDR. Her work has been presented at institutions including the Institut für Zeitgeschichte (Munich) and the Leibniz-Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung (Potsdam), supported by DAAD grants.
