University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centerمعرفی
Dr. Mack C. Mitchell serves as Vice President for Medical Affairs at UT Southwestern Medical Center and holds the Nancy S. and Jeremy L. Family Professorship in Gastroenterology. He previously served as Director of Gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Chairman of Internal Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center. His academic career spans over a decade at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he focuses on alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) and hepatology.
Dr. Mitchell earned his M.D. from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, completing residency in internal medicine and fellowships in gastroenterology and clinical pharmacology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Vanderbilt University. He holds fellowships from the American College of Physicians and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
His research focuses on mechanisms of alcohol-induced liver injury, clinical trials for ALD therapies, biomarker discovery, and disparities in liver disease outcomes. Key interests include complement system dysregulation, immunomodulatory treatments (e.g., anakinra, pentoxifylline), and the role of microbial metabolites in disease progression. He leads NIH-sponsored studies on ALD and co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles.
Dr. Mitchell sits on advisory councils for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has pioneered clinical trial designs for ALD, including the AHFIRM trial evaluating larsucosterol, and contributed to consensus statements on ALD management. His work addresses racial/ethnic disparities in liver transplantation access and outcomes, emphasizing health equity in hepatology.
Major achievements include developing prognostic scores (IL-13/age mortality predictor), identifying keratin-18 as a diagnostic biomarker, and demonstrating lactobacillus therapy's benefits for gut-liver axis repair. His lab integrates proteomics, clinical trials, and translational research to advance ALD treatment paradigms.
