Maarten Manse is a postdoctoral researcher at Linnaeus University, Sweden, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Department of Cultural Sciences. He holds a PhD from Leiden University (2021), focusing on colonial governance and taxation in Indonesia. His research explores Southeast Asian colonial history, emphasizing mechanisms of colonial administration, state-society dynamics, and treaty-making processes. He currently leads the project 'Imperial Expansion and Intercultural Diplomacy,' analyzing treaty systems in Southeast Asia (1750–1920).
Research interests include colonial taxation, legal pluralism, and the socio-political impacts of colonial policies. His work bridges archival analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, examining how fiscal strategies, labor systems, and diplomatic frameworks shaped colonial societies. Recent publications address topics like taxation violence in Seram, the 'looping effect' of colonial knowledge production, and treaty translation dynamics between European and Asian actors.
Manse has taught at Leiden University, Utrecht University, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, offering courses on imperialism, world history, and theoretical frameworks. His academic networks include roles in the Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies and the Global Humanities PhD Program. He actively contributes to collaborative projects on global connections and colonial comparisons, challenging traditional narratives of colonial exceptionalism.
