MX 'Oops' Cooper is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Music, Multimedia, Theatre & Dance at Lehman College, City University of New York. A multimedia performance artist and educator, Cooper's work centers on hybridity and ecstatic disobedience as a path toward embodied wellness.
Education:
- B.A. in Dance and Religion, George Washington University
- M.F.A. in Integrated Media Arts, Hunter College
Cooper's transdisciplinary research weaves together Urban Arts (breaking, house, vogue femme, rap), Somatic Studies (yoga, Thai yoga massage), Media Studies, and Gender Studies to explore consciousness as a medium. Their creative practice fosters lush worlds of queer becoming through transnational Afro-diasporic imagining, linking urban arts with somatic practices to question whether consciousness itself is the primary artistic medium.
Supported by the Jerome Foundation, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and Research Foundation CUNY, Cooper has held residencies at CultureHub NYC and Djerassi Resident Artists Program. Professional highlights include collaborations with Jeffery Gibson and Rashaad Newsome, video design for Jumatatu Poe and Marjani Forte, and membership in the HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN? Collective (Whitney Biennial, Art Basel Miami).
A certified 500hr RYT yoga instructor and Thai Yoga Massage practitioner, Cooper integrates somatic healing modalities into artistic and educational frameworks, presenting work globally from Socrates Sculpture Park to Nairobi's GoDown Center as a U.S. State Department Cultural Envoy.
