M. Suresh Sundaresan serves as the Robert W. Lear Professor of Finance and Economics within the Finance Division at Columbia Business School, Columbia University. A faculty member since 1980, he has established himself as a leading scholar in fixed-income markets, derivatives, and risk management through extensive publications in top-tier journals including the Journal of Finance and Review of Financial Studies.
His educational background includes an MS (1978) and PhD (1980) from Carnegie Mellon University, providing the foundation for his decades-long academic career at Columbia.
Professor Sundaresan's research spans Treasury auctions, default risk, asset pricing, and pension allocation, with current work focusing on corporate bankruptcy mechanisms, micro-lending dynamics, and central bank liquidity provision. His investigations into micro-loans specifically examine default patterns, recovery rates, and strategies for reducing borrowing costs in developing economies. This work demonstrates consistent engagement with real-world financial market challenges and regulatory implications.
His recent publications reveal evolving research trajectories: early pandemic years saw significant focus on vaccine economics and crisis valuation (2020-2021), while subsequent work shifted toward banking regulation (liquidity requirements, liability structures) and infrastructure financing under political risk. Climate risk pricing and Treasury market microstructure remain persistent threads throughout his output, reflecting enduring interests in market frictions and risk assessment.
Professor Sundaresan has trained numerous MBA and PhD students who now hold faculty positions globally and senior roles in major investment banks. His industry engagement includes full-time consultancy for Morgan Stanley Asset Management (2000-2001), strategic work at Lehman Brothers (1986-1987), and training programs for Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street firms. He has testified before U.S. Congress on corporate bond market transparency and served on the Treasury Bond Markets Advisory Committee.
Professional service highlights include a residency at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (2006), associate editorship of the Journal of Finance, and development of influential cases on microfinance securitization through Columbia's CaseWorks program. His textbook Fixed-Income Markets and Their Derivatives remains a key industry reference.
