M. Evan Thomas is an Associate Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy at Converse University, where he serves as Chair of the Marriage and Family Therapy Department and Program Director for the MMFT Program. He teaches at the University Center Greenville campus, focusing on systemic approaches to therapy and clinical supervision.

Dr. Thomas specializes in Appalachian mental health and the opioid epidemic in Appalachia, drawing on his Georgia Appalachian heritage. His research also explores ethical implications for queer therapists in their communities and advocates for gender-affirming care through the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Queer Trans Advocacy Network (QTAN).
Recent publications examine trauma-informed care frameworks, systemic disclosure decisions in mixed-orientation relationships, and training needs for Appalachian mental healthcare professionals. His scholarly work employs interpretative phenomenological analysis and narrative family therapy techniques.
Dr. Thomas maintains a private practice (Thomas Counseling Services, LLC) in Greenville, focusing on substance use and queer community care. He supervises clinical training during Jan Term and Summer Term while advocating against restrictive legislation impacting transgender and non-binary clients.
