M. Hakan Yavuz is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Utah’s School of Public Affairs. His research focuses on transnational Islamic networks, state-building, ethnic conflict, and Turkish nationalism. He holds a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1998) and has conducted fieldwork in Central Asia.
- Research Interests: Ethno-religious nationalism, Turkish foreign policy, memory studies, neo-Ottomanism
- Awards: Tanner Fellow (2013), two Superior Research Awards from the University of Utah (2009, 2001)
His recent publications analyze Turkish democratization, the Karabakh conflict, and Islamist movements. He has supervised PhD students and taught cross-listed courses with the Middle East Center.
- Grants: War & Independence grant (2019-2020), long-term funding for Turkic peoples’ identity research (2015-2027)
