Professor M Catherine Maternowska is a Professor of Violence Prevention for Young People at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport, affiliated with the Institute for Education, Community & Society (IECS). She holds a PhD from Columbia University, an MPH from the University of Michigan, and a BSc (Econ) from the London School of Economics. Her research focuses on violence prevention, gender equity, and structural violence, including climate change's impact on children's well-being. She co-leads the Childhood Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (CSEA) Solutions Hub, a $4.5M global initiative addressing childhood sexual violence through evidence-based solutions.
Her work spans three decades, with field-based research in Haiti, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, and other regions. She previously led UNICEF's Multi-Country Study on the Drivers of Violence and served as PI for the CSEA Solutions Hub. Current research interests include stigma and help-seeking behaviors, collective rhythmic drumming as trauma therapy, and climate change as a structural violence driver.
