M Arif Hasan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Wayne State University. He received his Ph.D. in Theoretical & Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and completed postdoctoral research at UC San Diego and the University of Arizona. His work is supported by significant NSF grants including the Connections in Quantum Information Science: A Sound Leap (2022-2025) and the New Frontiers of Sound Science and Technology Center (2023-2028).
- Education: Ph.D. (UIUC, 2014), B.S. (BUET, 2007)
- Employment: Assistant Professor (Wayne State, 2021-present), Assistant Research Professor (Arizona, 2019-2021)
Dr. Hasan's research focuses on topological acoustics and quantum-classical analogies, particularly through the development of acoustic pseudospin systems and topological metamaterials. His Acoustic Pseudospin and Topological Metamaterials Laboratory explores classical wave systems that mimic quantum phenomena, enabling room-temperature operation and non-contact measurement of entangled states.
The 15 most recent publications demonstrate consistent innovation across multiple disciplines. Key research themes include acoustic analogues of quantum entanglement, topological wave systems, nonlinear localization in granular media, and geometric phase engineering. The work spans experimental demonstrations, computational modeling, and theoretical analysis of wave propagation in structured materials.
- Scientific Awards: NSF Connections in Quantum Information Science (SouL) Grant (2022-2025)
- NSF New Frontiers of Sound (NewFoS) Center Grant (2023-2028)
Dr. Hasan has advised multiple graduate researchers through NSF-funded projects and has extensive experience with both experimental and computational approaches. His laboratory at Wayne State University investigates classical wave systems that emulate quantum properties, focusing on applications in information transport and wave control through topological interface states.
